The Ridgewood turkey trot is a Raleigh Thanksgiving tradition. For the second year it is also a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Last year over 1,200 runners from 28 states raised more than $13,000 for the National MS Society!

This year we are introducing a "recreational" 8K run option which will not utilize timing chips. Competitive 8K racers will receive ChampionChip times and will be eligible for race prizes including a free pair of Mizuno running shoes for every 100th finisher.

St. Patty’s Run Green 8K Exceeded Expectations
Nearly 900 Runners Attended the Inaugural Race

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 10, 2009) -- Bruce Bokish, director of MS Events, announced today that the March 8 St. Patty’s Run Green 8K drew in nearly 900 runners, exceeding expectations. Profits from the inaugural race, held in downtown Raleigh, were donated to the National MS Society of Eastern North Carolina.

“The community support for this race was outstanding,” said Bokish. “The inaugural St. Patty’s Run Green 8K surpassed all expectations, and for that we are extremely thankful.”

The first place male and overall winner of the competitive, U.S.A. Track and Field sanctioned 8K race was Ben Vasquez, 21, of Raleigh, with a time of 28:41. The first place female competitive winner was Claudin Mangum, 27, of Raleigh, with a time of 32:20. For complete race results, visit http://tinyurl.com/RunGreen8KResults.

“We can’t thank the runners, volunteers and supporters enough for helping us make this eco-friendly race a success,” said Pete Pagano, owner of Tir na nOg Irish Pub and CFO of Green Planet Catering.

The race aimed to minimize landfill waste through the use of electronic race packets and compostable food and drink containers. The first 500 registered runners received a handheld Amphipod water bottle to reduce cup use at water stops. The race also promoted earth-friendly education with an exposition area near the finish line.

Sponsors for the event included: Tir na nOg Irish Pub, Fleet Feet Sports Raleigh, Brooks Sports, Articulon, Bay Six USA, Green Planet Catering, SportKilt, Amphipod, Chiropractic Café, Drymax Socks, CityGate Real Estate, The Fresh Market, Skin Care for Athletes, 99.9 The Fan – ESPN Radio, 100.7 The River, and 96 Rock.
